Emirates is the biggest airline in the Middle East. It is owned by the government of Dubai and travels to 150 destinations in 80 countries. Emirates has around 300 fancy planes and its main airport is in Dubai. Emirates is a relatively new airline that started in 1985. Despite being around for a short time, it has become one of the top airlines in the world in terms of profit and amount of cargo transported.
Emirates Carry-on Baggage
Your carry-on luggage limit on Emirates depends on your cabin class and ticket fare. Remember that both handbags and laptop bags are considered carry-on items.

Carry-On Baggage Exceptions
- Parents traveling with infants can bring one extra collapsible carrier, cot, or stroller along with their fare and cabin allowances. If the storage spaces above your seat are full, you might have to check your luggage in the hold. It’s a good idea to call ahead and request extra space if you need it during your flight.
- Emirates airline’s minor policy is often a topic of inquiry among passengers.
- If you use a wheelchair, you can bring a fully collapsible wheelchair with you on the plane for free. This is in addition to the regular amount of luggage you’re allowed to bring.
Emirates Checked Baggage
Emirates claims to offer a very generous baggage allowance compared to other airlines. The amount of checked luggage you can bring on the airline depends on where you’re flying from and to, what class you’re flying in, and how much your ticket costs. Emirates may use either a weight model or a per-piece model depending on your route.
Emirates Checked Baggage Per Piece Model
Emirates has a table that shows how much-checked baggage you can bring on flights from Africa, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, and the Middle East to the Americas. It also includes flights from Africa to the Americas, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, or the Middle East.

Don’t forget to review Emirates Airlines’ seat selection policy when reading about their other policies, like the flight change policy mentioned earlier.
Emirates Per-Piece Checked Baggage
- If you’re taking multiple flights and the first flight leaves from the United States on a non-Emirates airline, you’ll probably have to follow the luggage rules of the first airline.
- If you’re starting your trip in Africa and you purchased an Economy Special ticket before May 11, 2020, you’re allowed to check in two pieces of luggage. Each piece can weigh up to 23 kg.
- If you’re traveling from the Americas, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand and have a layover in Dubai that’s 24 hours or longer, your baggage will be weighed instead of counted per piece.
- If you are a member of Emirates’ frequent flyer programs, you may be allowed to bring more baggage in certain situations. Please call to get more information.
Baggage Weight Model
For Emirates flights that are not mentioned in the per-piece baggage allowance model, a weight system is used. Passengers are allowed to check items based on weight instead of a set number limit.

Emirates Weight Checked Baggage
- If you have an Economy Special ticket for travel between UAE and India, you can bring up to 25 kg of luggage.
- If you bought an Economy Saver ticket on or after November 26, 2019, and you’re leaving from Australia or New Zealand, you can bring up to 30 kg of luggage.
- Emirates frequent flyer program members may get more baggage allowance in certain situations. Please call to ask questions.
Emirates Checked Baggage Exceptions
- People who use crutches or braces can check them for free.
- If you are carrying a dialysis machine as a passenger, you don’t have to pay any fee to check it.
- Dogs that provide assistance can be transported in the cargo area, but they are not permitted in the passenger cabin.
Emirates Excess Baggage Policy
Passengers with Emirates tickets can pay extra to increase the amount of baggage they are allowed to bring. Emirates Airlines do not allow any luggage item that is larger than 300 cm (118 in) to be checked on their commercial flights. You can either send it through Emirates freight or use a third-party shipping service.
Excess Baggage Weight Model
If you’re flying with Emirates and following their weight-based baggage allowance, you can purchase extra weight in increments of five kilograms, up to a maximum of 25 kilograms. You can save money by buying extra baggage space online up to four hours before your flight. The first 5 kg add-on pack is 50% cheaper online than at the check-in desk, and each additional weight pack is 20% less.
This table shows the extra fees for Emirates baggage based on the route. The airline only accepts payment in United States dollars. If you are using a different currency, the exchange rate on the day of the transaction will be used.

Imagine you have a business-class ticket from London to Madrid and your luggage weighs 65 kilograms. You can bring up to 40 kg of luggage for free with your fare. If you buy the next 5 kg online, it will cost $7.50. But if you buy it at the airport, it will cost $15. To reach a total weight of 65 kg, you need four more 5-kg packs. If you buy them in advance, they will cost $12 each. If you wait to buy them at the check-in desk, they will cost $15 each. If you buy your extra baggage fees at least 4 hours before your flight, you will pay $55.50 for flights that use the weight model. If you wait to buy them at the airport, you will pay $75.
Emirates Excess Baggage Per-Piece Model
If you are traveling on an Emirates flight that charges per piece of luggage, you have the option to pay for additional bags. You can check up to 10 items per ticket holder, which includes the allowances for your fare and cabin.
You can save money by buying extra luggage space online up to four hours before your departure. You can only purchase a maximum of three extra items online. Any additional bags will be charged at the full rate.
If you have extra bags when flying with Emirates, you will have to pay a fee of $200 per bag. This is the full amount for each bag under their per-piece model. If you’re traveling in Economy class, you can get a discount on extra luggage when you book online. The first piece of extra luggage is 50% off and the other two are 20% off. All other people need to pay the complete charge for each additional baggage.

Emirates Excess Baggage Fees
If you use the weight model, Emirates will charge you extra for luggage that is too heavy or too big. If you’re flying from Africa or to/from the Americas, you’ll be charged $75 for each parcel that exceeds the weight limit. If your parcel is also too big, you’ll be charged $250. And if it’s both too big and too heavy, you’ll be charged $350. If you purchase extra luggage allowances for the same trip, the fees increase to $275 for overweight bags, $325 for oversized bags, and $400 for bags that are both overweight and oversized.
Sports Equipment Baggage Policy
You can check most sports equipment on Emirates flights. If your luggage is bigger than 300 cm (118 in), you need to send it through Emirates freight or a third-party luggage shipper.
Sports Equipment |

SCUBA Equipment |
Air canisters are allowed as checked baggage, but they must be empty. |
Sporting / Hunting Weapons (target pistols, target rifles, air guns, safari rifles, hunting rifles) |
To bring firearms and ammunition on an Emirates flight, you need to unload them, take them apart, and pack them in your luggage or a gun case. You also need to let Emirates know at least three days before your flight and get their approval. Put ammunition packs in a container that doesn’t have the word or symbol for “explosives” on it. And make sure the container is full. You are allowed to bring sporting weapons and ammunition, but the total weight cannot exceed 5 kg (11 lbs). Before traveling to or within the UAE, individuals need to obtain permission from UAE authorities in advance. |
Ski and Snowboard Equipment |
You can usually check your ski and snowboarding equipment. You will be charged extra fees if you exceed the luggage limit on your ticket. |
Windsurf Boards, Kite-Surfing Equipment, Kayaks, Body Boards, Pole Vaults |
The sails need to be taken off and made collapsible. Also, the things should be packed in a case that has a hard shell |
Surfboards |
To pack a surfboard, remove the fins or pack them tightly in polystyrene foam. Use bubble wrap or neoprene foam to pack the nose and tail. Wrap the sides in cardboard to absorb any shocks. If the board has been repaired, put it in a board bag. |
